Community-Based Disaster Preparedness

Jeevika's objective is twofold, to achieve livelihood security for the poorest of the poor and to increase their preparedness and ability to cope with future disasters. In a harsh, disaster-prone environment, livelihood security depends on disaster preparedness and strong crisis coping mechanisms. The project is building the capacity of communities to assess their exposure to different hazards and develop appropriate strategies and contingency plans for coping with disasters. The project uses a community-based approach which empowers communities to asses their own vulnerability, develop risk mitigation strategies and manage relief responses themselves to achieve the most context-appropriate solutions.

Disaster praparedness activities focus around four pillers.

  1. Earthquake Resistant Housing Support Programme
  2. Drinking Water Programme
  3. Drought Proofing through Integrated Land and Water Management
  4. Disaster Preparedness Capacity Building–trainings delivered through Disaster Mitigation Institute
